“Do what you love fearlessly.”

This is the advise that Southeast Missouri State University graduate Louise Marler ‘85 gives for current and future college students, and it is a motto that Marler lives by every day.

Originally from St. Louis County, Marler graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science in business administration in 1985. She majored in marketing with a minor in psychology and was one class away from a minor in art, a very odd combination it would seem.

“Most people did not understand the combination of my studies. It made sense to me. As a left-handed and right-brained person, I have always figured things out differently. And got use to others being a bit confused by my ideas,” Marler said.

However, this odd combination has actually helped Marler in her career.

“I chose the psych minor since it is really important to me to understand why people do what they do. Also why a person buys what they buy,” explained Marler. “It helps my career to have knowledge of the subliminal effects of color and price, timing and associations. Selling a lifestyle brand is an attitude or idea that is perception more than the sum of actual materials.”

Today, Marler lives in Santa Monica, Calif., and works to promote companies through marketing and design. She designs packaging, logos, t-shirts, greeting cards, window displays, fine art photography and a lot more. Her fine art photography has even been featured on television shows including “CSI Miami,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,”  “Reba” and others.

Louise Marler has become incredibly successful in her field, and she has a lot of advice for students today.

“Get an internship and network with your colleagues and alumni with a clear and reliable understanding of helping each others’ careers,” said Marler.

Marler says that her time at Southeast contributed to her success in the real world. She says one of the highlights of her education at Southeast was the small class sizes and personal attention. One thing that she learned in college was that discipline and determination rule.

“Balance is key to performing well,” says Marler.  “Confident, polite and fun are qualities that have made me successful.”

Even though Marler benefited from the academic side of Southeast, she also says the social side helped her in her career.  Outside of classes, Marler was the promotions coordinator for the marketing club and vice president of the Psi Chi National Psychology Society. In her free time she liked hiking at the Trail of Tears and watching the rugby team.

“Animal House with John Belushi was released around that time. We were living it!” said Marler.

Today, when Marler isn’t busy with her business, she hikes, does yoga and collects vintage furniture. She even got licensed recently to ride a motorcycle. Another passion of Marler’s is traveling and exploring other cultures. She especially loves France.

Whatever adventure Marler embarks on next, one thing is for sure: she will do what she loves fearlessly.

Lincoln GrayLincoln Gray ‘01 has worked in fast food, sales and construction, so he learned early on in life the definition of hard work. Now as a manager at a growing accounting firm, Gray used those life experiences to become the success he is today.

Gray grew up in O’Fallon, Mo. His father had been working in fast food since the age of 15 and was owner of the Dairy Queen franchises in Southeast Missouri.  As young as eight-years-old, Gray spent his summers with his father doing what needed to be done, whether it was working in the kitchen or scrubbing tables.  Similarly his stepfather worked in construction before starting his own business, where Gray also worked on weekends and after school.

“Working beside both of them and seeing the effort and the sacrifices that it took to make ends meet helped me to gain an understanding of what being in business means,” said Gray. “I truly think this has helped me relate to the business owners who I deal with on a daily basis.”

Gray graduated from Southeast with a Bachelor of Science in business administration in 2001. While there he continued to meet people who inspired him and changed his life both in the classroom and on the football field.

“More memories and experiences than I ever could have imagined were forged within the couple of square miles around that campus,” said Gray. “I met people who changed the course I was on and helped me get to where I am today.”

One such individual was Dr. Gary Johnson, a professor from the Harrison College of Business.

“He was one of those extremely influential people who truly made a significant impact then and is someone that I still consider a friend today,” said Gray.

He says while he was on Southeast’s football team, it “did a lot of losing” but taught him a lot and led to “some of the best memories of my life.”

Today, Gray is a manager in the financial services department at Brown Smith Wallace, one of the region’s largest locally owned public accounting firms.  The firm has doubled in size and expanded into the global marketplace since Gray joined.  In 2008 Accounting Today recognized it as one of the “Best Firms to Work For” in the country.

In addition Gray has found success in his personal life as well.  He is engaged to Tina Hobbs, an LPN.

Throughout Gray’s life, he has learned the value of hard work and perseverance. Both his father and stepfather helped him appreciate these values from a young age through the examples they set in their own lives.  Upon joining the Southeast football team he continued to learn lessons in hard work and discipline. These experiences helped craft Gray into the person he is today and have contributed to the success he has become.
